>I've recently been reading Mark Buchanan's 'Nexus', one of a
number of books
about small world/network theory that are around at the moment
(there are
others by Barabasi, Watts, and Strogatz, all three of whom have
done some of
the key empirical research in this area). Buchanan is (or was)
New
Scientist editor, so the style of the book is very much in the
style of the
magazine, and late on in the book he starts talking about memes-
although he
gives Gladwell's Tipping Point more space and more status. I
think it's an
interesting book of relevance to the list.
I went to check out Watts' book from the UCSD library and it was booked for
the next six months. Since only professors can do that, it suggests to me
that someone is either preparing a course on the subject or is already in
the act of teaching one. It looks like a good direction for the "art" of
memetics to take, although it is no doubt cognitive science that the folks
at UCSD have in mind.
