Interesting piece Joe ! But IMO what the writer fails to see, but that wasn 't his concern I suppose, is that nowadays, revolutions in capitalistic countries can begin on other, but therefor no less radical lines of thought.

I take as an example the situation where my country, Belgium, was in just after the Dutroux- case broke out. If the parents, than in Brussels had the nerve to light the fuse the people would had followed, but the only reason for their existence consisted out of knowing the thruth about their children, something that they, after 5 years not yet know !

If you can accept that not thus the initial premise about the falling rate of profit can be the only thing by which a revolution can start than everything is possible. If peoples are ain 't getting emotional, spiritual, social, cultural, even political satisfaction IMO, this can lead to revolution.

Another example, in fact 2, just after WWII King Leopold III ' refused ' to renounce to the trone, a civil war was eminent, and the second time it was about 15 years ago when his son, Boudewijn I refused to sign the abortion- law, again the pre- revolution voices were heard. In the former its political in origin, the latter was religious based. But in both cases, people were willing to set their profit aside for more personal, socially, political, religiously reasons.

And for the record, I suspect that the ethnical differences in the US will play their tricks if you are not careful... Again, this will have nothing to do with poverty, but all with identitiy ! The immiserization thesis of Marx and the revision by Baran and Waller- stein collapses if you take other reasons than poverty into account.
