They are the heartbeat of this presidency. Reed is the ex-Christian
Coalition political genius; Rove a born-again zealot; Feith is deputy
secretary of defense (or some title like that) for policy; Wolfowitz was
dean of the School for Advanced International Studies, where he parked
himself while Clinton was in power, and is probably the most knowledgeable
of the lot, a protege of Paul Nitze; Richard Perle heads the non-paid
consultive group at the Defense Department -- they are the ones who launched
the anti-Saudi meme a couple of months ago. Perle and Wolfowitz are the
leaders of the 'might makes right' school of thinking. Why pay bazillions
for a military if we don't, bigosh, use 'em?
I'm not sure all this is that interesting to folks outside the beltway, but
this is where the policy leverage is, and these are some of the folks who
have it.
I do reflect, from time to time, that I am generally upwind of Washington
ground zero, and am happy for that sad thought. Certainly, my sense is that
our safety here is less than it was a year ago, and that we have brought
much of the increase in danger upon ourselves.
Cheers,
Lawry
