    Good question. I think at that stage it is much more genuinely a reflection of the emotional state of the child, than with adults who laugh. But as the child ages they learn to manipulate their emotions to get what they want.

    That's a pretty lame answer but it's pretty basic too. I'm sure there are whole chapters of books on this... not that I'm an expert, just an armchair memetics philosopher. :-)
