    Which we can't really know about, or speak about, in anything but conjecture.

    What we _can_ see is replicated behavior, and culturally continuous artifacts.

    Things that can, and do, through the senses, get into the memory in the brain of the people who've observed them. There is no hundredth monkey, in fact, and no way of 'replicating' memes through anything but observation and behavior.

    Perhaps one day neurology will find some common correlations in detail in the brain between all of these things and be able to point to a signal and say- that's the meme for using a handkerchief instead of a kleenex.

    But until and if, it's time to get over it- memes do not replicate in the head. The cultural matrix is performance-based and appears continuous only through the memories and the artifacts (the props) of the performers, in the same way a film appears continuous.
