It was too long ago. All I remember is that he was explaining to Dr. Watson
how he knew some character was or wasn't what he said he was, and part of
his lecture included the idea that an awl shapes the hand of the shoemaker
and some other oddities about people and their work that was revealed upon
close examination. But the exact quote escapes me. But since Holmes was
always explaining himself to Watson and shaming Watson for his short
sightedness in the process, it could be in just about any of his stories.
