That reasoning brings back echoes of the behaviorists placing the brain
in a black box and ignoring what happens between stimulus and
response, simply because the intervening processes were not
amenable to ready observation. To deny that anything cognitive is
happening just because you can't easily observe it is to search for your
quarter where the light is better, but not where the quarter was dropped.
And as memetic (that is, replicable) behavior must be a subset of
behavior in general, the cognitive criticism of behaviorism a forteriori
applies to attempts to formulate a behaviorist memetics.
