IIRC it would be because whilst the minority audience for Am Football in the
UK (I was one too) saw the wave in games earlier, most people didn't see it
until the 1986 World Cup in... Mexico, and thus became colloquially known in
the UK as the Mexican wave. It has even spread to Wimbledon (when they let
the rabble in... to cheer Tim Henman heroically bottle it and get beat).
