IIRC, silent film ran at 18 frames a second (partly why it looks
funny today), whilst current film indeed runs at 24 fps. Transfers of film
to TV, apparently change the frame rate slightly to 25 fps, which is why
some long films run shorter on TV/video, without actually having been cut.
(or so I read in a film magazine once).
