    Good morning,
I just talked with a US Foreign Service officer two evenings ago. He was
posted to Damascus for a couple of years about five years ago. He said that
Americans were quite welcome, and that while US tourists were few that they
had a good time. So, unless your t-shirt were really ugly, I would guess
that you would have a fine time there.

Hamas and Fatah: they would get along. Their disagreements now are about how
to respond to the Israeli threat. Hamas believes that only war against
Israel is left; Fatah believes that negotiations and a compromise political
solution with Israel are possible. Were the issue of Israel not a problem,
the members of Fatah and Hamas would have no issue between them. Remember, a
Palestinian family can have members who belong to both, as well as members
who have yet other views. Palestinians are quite open even with outsiders
about this, and will introduce to a visitor members of their family who have
these different poltiical views (much as a Democrat in the US might
introduce you to his Republican uncle). Or you can go to a cafe to hear them
    arguing with each other.

USS Cole was a target of opportunity, a vulnerability that anti-US
terrorists exploited. If Grant's point, or yours, is that there are some in
Yemen, or the Arab or Muslim countries who view the US as an enemy due to
our support for Israel, and will take action based on this enmity, your
point is, of course, entirely correct. But, then, that is not what Grant was
    asserting.

    Lawrence
