I feel I should step in to defend Steve Jones. I nearly did my first post-doc with him, but decided to go to South America instead. He's a really nice guy, very amusing, and he has one of the widest knowledges of evolution I have come across. His own major contribution was to show that Cepeae nemoralis snails have a shell colouring that is determined by the effects of climate. Even a microclimate difference of a few inches exerts a selective pressure on shell morphology. It's one of the few studies that really combine field observations with lab experiment, and constitutes laboratory proof that evolution occurs - and what's more that it acts on apparently trivial variation.
