    "Evolutionary psychology" warrants a several page span in the index. Just
    looking at one of these pages I notice Gould credits Nietzsche (and Darwin)
    with the dichotomy between historical origin and current utility. This could
    be interesting *in itself* (or apparently if you're a Kantian). I've been
    too busy delving into an onslaught of Durkheim and Levy-Bruhl to get into
    Gould's book yet (aside from a little index driven sneak peeking to whet my
    appetite).

    It seems that Durkheim even touched a bit on a contrast of origin and
    utility in the first part of Chapter 4 "Rules for the Explanation of Social
    Facts" of his book _The Rules of Sociological Method_.
