I'd agree. But remember we're now living in what many people would
want to call a post-ideological era, where the "old" debates about left and
right have disappeared, and an era where philosophical thinking has been
heavily influenced by post-modernism, deconstructivism etc. etc. that have
basically undermined ideas of grand theory- saying instead everything is
theory nothing is real, value is relative etc. etc.
There are those who argue vociferously against all of this (e.g.
Sokal & Bricmont's 'Intellectual Impostures', Miller & Philo's 'Market
Killing' are good reads), but whether it's true or not, I have to say I meet
few students these days who seem to think about things in a deep sense
(although maybe they just don't want to discuss it with me! [who can blame
them shout the gallery]).
