It is pre memes but the best book I have ever read on money is Andrew Crockett's
Money, Theory, Policy and Institutions Nelson and Sons, London (1973). It would
not actually be hard to convert to a memetic stance. He shows how the concept
of 'money, as a medium of exchange arose several times, but catches on to
support various forms of institution.
The danger is that in the process 'money' assumes a destructive side as an end,
or sole end in its own right, especially when coupled with 'ownership' memes.
See Chapter 10 in Shifting the Patterns (Price and Shaw 1998) or Jeff
Gates''The Ownership Solution (1999). Sorry I have forgotten the publisher.
