No, you're very right here, and the influence of owners to some
extent depends who you work for in terms of literal interference with
editoral decision-making, but plenty of people argue that market driven
journalism inherently compromises journalistic independence at a more
fundamental level, as they become locked into a battle for ratings/sales to
please advertisers which isn't the same as the public interest. I could say
more here as it's a part of the book I'm writing on journalism, but it's
off-topic for the list so I'll behave.
