I am reading Frans DeWaal's "Good Natured" and he sez that it is
necessary for us to decide who we can trust to be a partner in an act
of reciprocal altruism, and who you can't. "Us" and "Them" is a way
of determining who we are cooperating with and who we are competing
with. I think that divisive memes just occupy a "meme space" that is
an evolutionary necessity.
