It might be worth you looking at a wide range of media studies research that
does, amongst other things, things like tracking an issue and its
prepoderence in the news media (agenda-setting studies), or studies which
systematically monitor certain kinds of representation (e.g., and most
frequently studies of gender or ethnicity in the media). All of these kinds
of studies work on the presumption that certain things, be they themes or
images or whatever, persist in the media.
