In the Royal Mail, where I'm currently working part-time to support
myself while I develop a book proposal (about information), there's an
expression "to cut off". A fairly high proportion of postpeople are
part-timers like myself, and to cut off means to decline to work the overtime
(or some of it) that would be required to complete the duty to which you've been
assigned. Assuming overtime would be required, of course.
I cut off today, as it happens, because the mail was particularly heavy, and I
have an appointment that I really don't want to miss. And that's probably why
this analogy came to mind. I've decided not to respond to all of the points
that arise either directly or indirectly from something I've written. Life is
too short, as they say. My criteria for judging what to respond to, and what
to ignore, are my own business, and I intend them to remain so.
I just realised, I probably contravened the Official Secrets Act with that
first para. How exciting!! ;-)
