Next question: Does memetic theory explain instinct? I have read some
posts which use instinct as a separate concept.

Ken McE comments:

Instincts are quite separate and distinct from memes. An instinct is
something that a creature is born with, part of its genetic heritage.
Memes are acquired from other creatures during ones lifetime.
