When using the terms encoded information and processing (instead of the
confusing replicator, etc...: see my other posting), it becomes obvious
what is really happening in the examples on Lamarckism, Nick provides:
taking out a page of a book is an intervention at the level of physical
encoding. This is comparable to making knock-out mice (briefly: taking
away a gene from a mouse) or other genetic manipulations. Are our
genetic manipulations Lamarckian? Of course not. We didn't manage to
make the 'phenotype' influence the genotype, all we did was changing the
