Football uses around 40, what with offense being replaced by defence and
special teams handling kickoffs and field goals. The remaining players are
just there to replace the ones who get carried or limp off the field. Then
if you count coaching staff that includes a head coach as well as special
coaches for the three divisions mentioned above, you have a pretty coherent
form of chaos. I guess the best word would be complexity.
