I recommend "The Theory of Evolution" by John Maynard Smith, a beautiful little book written years ago (late 60s?), but still in print. It is actually the best short introduction to modern evolutionary theory. It is probably obligatory on this list to recommend Dawkins, but the strength of his polemic would switch your boss off.
