Mainly by influencing how well the genetic carrier survives. Blood type is
now being seen as one of the factors for disease resistance. Of course,
the *mix* of blood types comes about because there is a disadvantage to
having the same blood type as everyone else in the population. The same is
true for the histocompatibility genes. Look up ESS in Dawkins or other places.
