Yes, I think Bob is correct. Memes have to be able to exist in several
environments: neural and non-biological/neural, e.g. books, broadcast,
etc. In each of these environments, they have to have the ability to carry
out specific functions, so that they can go on to reach their targets--the
thought and behavior patterns of people and societies. memes have to have
quite a range of capabilities, which requires more linguistic structuring
than seems to be generally acknowledged. This lack of understanding of the
structural/functional repertoire of memes, allows, I think, the concept of
memes to be applied too broadly to just about anything that is an 'idea'
or a 'communication.'
