Ponzi's International Postal Reply Coupon scheme was a classic explosive
fraud, using only greed and novelty as enrollment mechanisms. Nowadays MLMs
have evolved to be extremely well engineered. The successful ones now have
extensive training (memetic programming of participants) and highly directed
replication and enrollment schemes. I cover this a just a bit in my book,
but it should be enough to familiarize you with the concept. Not all of them
are fraudulent, and in fact I predicted that they would continue to become a
dominant force in business. The term "viral marketing" is actually beginning
to be bandied about!
