You're right. I had difficulty communicating my idea in that e-mail. Rest assured that I do not really conflate decoding systems with memes.
Bill:
Wait a second, guys! Don't you think that language is largely memetic? And isn't language used in encoding and decoding memes? And besides language, quite a lot of culture is concerned with interpretation.
