Using Derek's D-up D-down terms, the equations I just wrote would end up
reading:
Dup = the potion of the working class whose children change class
(1 - Dup) = the portion of the working class whose children stay in the same
class
Ddown = the potion of the professional class whose children change class
(1 - Ddown) = the portion of the professional class whose children stay in
the same class
(( P * (1 - Ddown) ) * Rp) = the number of children from professional class
parents that will themselves enter the professional class in the next
generation (old money)
(( W * (1 - Dup) ) * Rw) = the number of children from working class parents
that will also enter the working class in the next generation
(( W * Dup ) * Rw ) = the number of children from working class parents who
will enter the professional class in the next generation (new money, if you
will)
(( P * Ddown ) * Rp ) = the number of children from professional class
parents who will enter the working class in the next generation.
So the more explicit version of the equations would be:
P' = (( P * (1 - Ddown) ) * Rp) + (( W * Dup ) * Rw )
W' = (( W * (1 - Dup) ) * Rw) + (( P * Ddown ) * Rp )
Sorry, but I haven't run these equations yet. I will tomorrow, if you
haven't already Derek. (It is very, very late here in the Pacific
Northwest, unlike in England.) But I expect they'd generate similar
results.
