Subject: Memeticson Dutch TV this weekend!
Dear all,
this weekend sunday 26 april there will be a
program on the Diana-meme with the involvement of Susan Blackmore
(one of JOM's editors) on Dutch TV.

It is on the third Dutch net, from 20.00 until 20:25 local time. I am
not sure if there is a time difference with the UK, it might be. The
program is called 'noorderlicht'
Parts of it are bound to be in English though.
I have requested information on whether the program can be seen on
the internet. If I get an answer I will forwrd it of course.

Ongeveer 25 jaar geleden introduceerde de
evolutionair bioloog Richard Dawkins een
nieuw begrip dat misschien inzicht kan
verschaffen in de manier waarop mensen
met hun emoties omgaan en hoe bepaalde
emoties zich als virussen in grote
groepen mensen kunnen nestelen. Hij kwam
tot de conclusie dat er wellicht ook
zoiets kon bestaan als zichzelf
vermenigvuldigende mentale constructies.
Deze constructies, die Dawkins de naam
'memen' gaf, planten zich voort door van
brein naar brein 'te springen'. Als
voorbeelden van 'memen' noemde Dawkins
onder andere muziektunes,
modeverschijnselen en ideologieen.
Inmiddels, 25 jaar later, ziet de Britse
psychologe Susan Blackmore in het idee
van 'memen' een krachtig concept, dat van
belang is voor een beter begrip van het
menselijk bewustzijn. Zij denkt dat de
Diana-gekte te verklaren is doordat het
fenomeen 'Di' een aantal bijzonder
succesvolle 'memen' in zich verenigde.
