Not so trivial. The mislabeling of all sorts of people as hosts of a
replicator will cause immune reactions in the scientific community, and
slow the spread of memetic thinking. There are a lot of people who have
invested a lot of effort in studying how humans learn non-replicated
information from their environment. Please don't ask memeticists to do
something that will be taken as running roughshod over all their efforts.
There are practical as well as scientific advantages for placing a minimum
of generalizations, presuppositions, or tacit assumptions in the definition.

No, only if it is acquired it by means that depended critically on the
causal influence of someone who had the same information earlier.

The term "meme" is intended for use in the evolutionary replicator theory
of memory items. It therefore needs to identify a subset of memory items
for which the recursion principle can be uniformly applied, even if just at
a rudimentary level for some cases. Throwing in cases where nearly all
hosts are of non-replicated information seriously fouls up the theory. The
word is designed for use in a certain kind of theoretical framework. It
covers a vast scope as it is, but is not designed for grabbing the greatest
conceivable social science territory. It is the new theoretical framework
that provides the rationale for the new word. Without that theoretical
framework, we might as well stick to old terms like "idea," etc. What books
or papers on memetics have you read?

The multitude of discoverers can be treated without attempting to call them
all memes. That is why my paper uses the term "mnemon" as well as "meme."
See the example about millions of people simultaneously getting the idea
that an earthquake struck. See my tcamb.htm article for more about stock

This works so badly in the theory that if granted, I would have to make up
yet another neologism to replace "meme" as you define it. You still do not
get past the problem of trying to tell skeptical, critical scientists a
particular mnemon is a "replicators" even when most instantiations are not.
Whether a particular instantiation of a mnemon is a replicator is not a
matter of whether some other instantiation is a replicator--regardless of
your personal taste. If you attempted to publish a paper asserting
otherwise, you would have plenty of criticism to face. It is easy for you
to dabble in memetics and propose new definitions, because you are not one
of those propounding and defending a theory to a whole world of social,
evolutionary, and information scientists.

I don't accept a false or artificial trivialization of this task, and
neither will the scientific community. In those cases where there are still
significant numbers of inventor hosts mixed with imitator hosts, a serious
research project awaits anyone interested in pursuing it.

With the rider, only the nomenclature need be changed to

A*B refers to memory content, not mode of causation. Even within the vast
class of replicated modes, there are huge numbers of distinct replication
event types. I will not give a distinct notation for each of the replicated
or non-replicated event types--this would generate theoretical chaos and
intractability. A*B is does not depend upon whether the formation is
heterogenic, parentally spread, peer-to-peer spread, and the many
subclasses thereof. I suggest reading my entire paper to get a sense of the
many formation event types.

If you don't like loose terms, then use the symbolic memetics that I
published in 1991 and 1998. See the quantitiative and empirical sections of
my 1998 paper, too.

I don't know what "encapsulation" you are talking about. But after reading
some of the hundreds of meme definitions that have popped up this decade, I
can say that one thing memetics does not nead right now is more definitions
trying to change the scope of phenomena covered.
