A leading Dutch playwright and culture critic recently coined the phrase
"the gymnastification of the erotic" - referring to contemporary
body-culture with its emphasis on working out, shaping up etc. as a new
form of sexual repression. This trend is much more pervasive in relatively
puritan societies like the US, than in more permissive ones like Denmark
and the Netherlands. Note also the emotional reactions from less permissive
societies to the proposed Dutch legislation of voluntary euthanasia. I've
seen headlines claiming the Dutch are considering "killing off" their
elderly citizens, while the only thing we'd like to achieve is granting a
more humane way out to those of us who really need it.
