Dave,
Thank you for your stimulating and most insightful post. There is no
doubt in my mind that you are one of the sanest humans I have had the
pleasure to "meet". This is a purely gut reaction, I will get around to
a more thought-out response in time.
My first response to your post was "my god he's right and we're doomed"
- nothing short of a specie wide frontal lobotomy will save the human
race! However, I have done some extensive research on "Culture",
specifically in relation to organizational behaviour, and I would like
to share some of my findings which may indicate a solution to a meme
induced "hive" syndrome.
I have for many years been concerned with the obvious paradox of
competition v's cooperation. Our western society in particular seems to
worship the ideal of individual achievement, while the reality is that
any significant variation from mediocre is treated as abhorrent, even
anti-social behaviour. The reason for this is quite simple. To quote
Edward de Bono, "The natural tendency of mind is towards certainty,
security and arrogance". Humans are basically lazy and the hardest work
is thinking. It is far easier to use one's intelligence to defend a
prejudice or a pre-conceived idea than to actually examine the idea from
different perspectives and develop multiple hypothesises. This leads us
to the entrenched cultural norms (memes?) in organizations that control
everything from the promotion system to the type of cookies in the lunch
room. I believe that culture is the major controlling force in any
organization and that in order to manage change successfully, we have to
develop tools that will enable us to manipulate culture. I have had
many people tell me that this is impossible and quite a few accuse me of
being a few miles right of Adolf Hitler! I maintain that accidental (or
maybe meme controlled) cultural change is NOT more acceptable that
ethically and deliberately controlled change processes.
You might be interested in the results of a week and a half debate on
the SUN listserver. I treated the exercise as ethnographic-inductive
research:

I could not agree more. The challenge for individuals and organizations
alike is to continually scan the changing environment and adapt faster
than the competition. I believe the two most important factors are to
be process oriented and people oriented.

This is the old chicken and egg paradox. Does the present state reflect
the desires of past state? There are always external influences and a
gap in the cycle. A system dynamic might look like this: (see attached

I can think of so many examples to support this argument that I hesitate
to challenge it. However, I believe that this phenomenon is related to
awareness and the restructuring crisis which is indicative of the 2nd to
3rd Wave transition. And is the process of living more unpleasant? My
life is certainly more pleasant than what my parents experienced (two
world wars and a depression), and significantly more pleasant than my
grandparents experience.

“connectedness” with humanity are very important and form the basis of
civilization.

individual that is so far removed from rational thought processes as to
be considered dangerous to fellow humans. I think you have defined the
general human state quite well. If memes exist, I would like to keep my
“good” memes, like common sense, and continue to enjoy the process of
learning and experiencing life. What else is there?
