Hm, I can think of several ways to respond to your question.
Briefly, complex adaptive system theory is the general area of interest
here.
Rather than consider an entirely general fitness landscape, we are
concerned with
human adaptations. Within that narrow range of study, it makes sense to
define
things such as 'genes' and 'memes.'
I doubt this answers your question, but it might provide a start for
dialog.
