In this particular case I think the adoption and dissemination of Arabic
mathematics was critical (more important than printing, for example). Then
we have trade & conquest far and wide which would bring a greater variety
of memes to bear on European societies.

Yes, lots of niches. But niches in what? What's the cultural environment?
