Subject: re: this list & the specialization meme -
To Hans-Cees Speel (as admin)
I've a great deal of sympathy for Richard's position. Coming to
this discussion list it's hard to know what level of discussion
will be inclusive. It's apparent that specialism arises quickly;
in terms of specialised knowledge and jargon; and this may be
inevitable. You've suggested that some of the more technical
discussions could take place within the JOM itself, but it
appears that this won't solve the immediate problem of people
feeling excluded from the discussions taking part here.
As one of the parties probably guilty of such jargon and
specialisation I might make a suggestion. Perhaps when a
discussion starts to become very technical; or particularly
specialised, the debate could take place via private e-mail
between the individuals concerned. I, for one, have noticed that
many of these discussions become dialogues, and this must be very
frustrating to people new to the group. I'm happy for anyone who
has a technical point, or problem with any topic I've contributed
to contacting me directly. Perhaps that way the discussion group
can remain relatively general and lay-orientated.
I'm certainly enjoying the discussion taking place here, but I
feel it's important that people new to the topic don't feel
excluded.
Cheers,
Nick Rose
