Subject: Meme Extinction

Apologies to anyone who receives this more than once (had some email problems
here).

I wonder how useful it is to apply the concept of extinction to single memes.
As I understand its biological usage, it refers to the termination of a
genealogical lineage and so is used most often in reference to species
(but also populations and taxa higher than species). As far as I know, it's
not usually applied to single genes (but then again I'm a linguist, not a
biologist).
