Using a Windows platform at work, there are some indispensable programs. Those "must have", though, are quite often commercial, or shareware. The only difference is that the shareware are (in general) less expensive. But there are sometimes equivalent to those (and even sometimes better) programs. So here is a collection of freeware I use everyday...

If you want to make any research on Internet, I recommend the following websites:
The UK online phone Directory in case you need to find a phone number in UK (equivalent to the yellow pages).
The French white pages is the same as above... regardless of the country !
FTPsearch to find any file to download... provided that you know its name !
Google is a very fast and efficient search engine.
TalisWeb Opac is a search engine for books for the Universities of Manchester
You might also want to travel... In that case, have a look at those:
The French national railway company is called SNCF.
Its English equivalent are British Rail and Virgin Trains.
If the plane is your stuff, then try EasyJet, but don't forget a company that I never had to complain about, Cathay Pacific (but little choice of destinations)
There are useful ones here too:
Dictionnaire Universel Francophone en ligne.
Information about French administrative papers
Information about UK governmental services
Well, my hobbies include sports and computers, so here are some links I visit very often...
Computers
The reference site in French is called Hardware.fr. Two other very good websites in English are Tom Pabst's and Anandtech.
Sports
As a supporter, I just couldn't avoid starting with l'Olympique de Marseille. You can follow as well any French sport event from here.
